As the CEO of a content marketing agency, and host of a national TV show, you can imagine I get a lot of emails pitching me ideas.

Most of my emails are from PR Agencies, wanting me to consider interviewing their client on my TV show. On the Centerpost Media side I get pitched a range of services to offer our clients on a white label basis. I also get a ton of emails offering lead generation.

But the other day I got an email that was very disturbing. The company was offering negative SEO services against my competition. The email had a link to their website that read, “Hire us and we’ll do a negative SEO campaign and destroy your competition by building the worst possible backlinks towards their sites and keywords.” WOW, seriously?

Firstly, in my more than 26 years in the media business I have never been concerned with my competition. Maybe I am built differently, but I have always believed in focusing on what we do best and what clients or customers we can attract.

Secondly, I am all about positive energy. I loathe negativity. The world is full of enough serious problems without adding more negative drama.

Search Engine Optimization is all about helping the consumer find the services they are looking for when running an organic web search.

Thirdly, do you truly care about your potential customers if you engage in this kind of campaign? Search Engine Optimization is all about helping the consumer find the services they are looking for when running an organic web search. If you are running a negative SEO campaign, you are telling your prospects that you are more interested in making money than helping people.

I would rather our business fail miserably and walk out with my integrity still intact, than to be wildly successful knowing I had to use a negative or dirty campaign to turn a profit. I get it, people have made millions playing this game, but in the end they usually lose it all when they get caught.

My advice to any business owner is to focus on what you do well and spend your efforts marketing those services. If your competition is playing dirty, don’t get sucked into their game. If you spend time providing a service to others or helping your clients, you won’t have to worry about what your competition says or does.
