Going Solar

Going Solar

By Ed Frazier

Going Solar is becoming natural. In the 1950’s, Bell Labs produced the first solar panel. It was not really efficient, but since then it has continually developed into a viable and economic pathway to energy creation.

This week I had the opportunity to interview Kyle Frazier, the Head of Commercial Sales for Freedom Solar, LLC (one of the larger solar companies), on the Create, Build and Manage Radio Show and Podcast. He is responsible for market development and accelerating operations into key markets and verticals. Kyle provided great insight into how a commercial building owner, car dealer, or property owner can invest in and benefit from solar panels. He explained that there are four drivers in the decision process:

1. A 26% investment tax credit that is set to expire in two years.
2. Bonus Depreciation that allows the write off of the system in one year. Potential utility rebates for installing solar.
3. Energy Savings in electricity expense.
4. Return on investment up to 15%.

The time to get started on a solar power system is now.

The Green New Deal is promoting increased electricity use in vehicles and replacing current fossil fuel driven systems. The question is where will this power come from if fossil fuels are replaced? Solar panels will definitely be in the mix and power storage will be the next challenge. Even now it is making sense to add some solar power to one’s energy sources. With storage systems becoming more feasible in the not-too-distant future, we can expect a greater adoption of solar. Currently, a system tied to the grid allows owners to utilize the power they create and to sell excess back to the grid. The time to get started on a solar power system is now. The backlog of installs, and the expiring tax credits should encourage people to investigate solar sooner rather than later.
