Remembering the Fallen

Remembering the Fallen

Memorial Day is the day we set aside to reflect on the men and women who gave their own lives for our freedom. Freedom is never free; it was bought with blood and continues to be fought with blood.

I know for many, this holiday marks the start of summer. There will be outdoor cookouts, baseball games, and trips to the local lake. And that is okay; that is what our freedom is all about. You have the freedom in America to mark Memorial Day with your own tradition.

For me, I always want to take a moment to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice paid. To think about the families who have an empty seat at their table and in their heart on this Memorial Day.

For me, I always want to take a moment to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice paid. To think about the families who have an empty seat at their table and in their heart on this Memorial Day. The spouses, kids, parents, and other loved ones who don’t get to see their family member who died in active service.

Today is not about Veterans who are still with us, or older Veterans who died of other causes not related to their service. We do honor Veterans every day, and we have a special day set aside for Veterans in November.

Today is also not about those serving in active duty. We do honor our servicemen and women every day, and this past Saturday was Armed Forces Day.

No, today is about the men and women who died in the line of duty. I think about the countless stories of the Greatest Generation, and their sacrifice during the second World War. I think about the men that served alongside my dad in Vietnam that I never got to meet. I think about the men and women my age, who went to war in a desert so far from home and came back in a casket.

Like a lot of businesses, we close our doors on Memorial Day. Not to celebrate, but to remember.
