25 Apr Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone
I read a great quote from Grant Cardone the other day: “If you aren’t scared you aren’t doing anything big.” So many business owners I meet are scared to take the dive into content marketing. They don’t like the way they look on camera, or they don’t feel they have a message to share with the world.
I get it; working in media I have been on radio and television off and on my entire career. When I was not on air, I oversaw what went on air. I have coached talent and encouraged several people to take the leap and start a podcast, radio show, or TV show. Yet when I was challenged by my VP of Marketing in 2020 to step up and do the same for our company, I had to take a moment to build up the encouragement. Odd perhaps, but there is a difference between being a radio DJ and covering a live sporting event to stepping up and representing the company.
The first time I hosted my podcast in January of 2021 I was a little nervous. But over time I got comfortable and learned a lot from our guests. That weekly podcast turned into a weekly TV show. Most of my on-air career has been behind a radio mic, so when I had to host a TV show for the first time, I was a little scared. But soon I got comfortable in front of the camera, and I now host a nightly prime-time TV show. Once again I love learning from all our guests.
Today I am doing something new, once again getting me out of my comfort zone.
Today I am doing something new, once again getting me out of my comfort zone. I have been asked to deliver two speeches at Howard Payne University, my alma mater. The first is a meet and greet with students and alumni to discuss my book, Media Matters: How to leverage the media to grow your business. The second is a keynote address I am giving the Communications Department. It is an honor to get invited to speak at my college, but I am a little scared. But that is a good thing!
Don’t be afraid to try new things and get out of your comfort zone. Content marketing is all about creating content of value that will attract potential customers. It needs to be authentic, and no one knows your business better than you do. You are already the expert, you just need to be a little scared and show the world what you know.
The good news is, we are happy to coach and help you along the way. Reach out to us by clicking on the “Contact Us” button and we will get you scheduled on one of our shows to start your amazing journey into content marketing.
