Virtual Drone Trip

Virtual Drone Trip

One of my favorite shows to binge watch is Aerial America on the Smithsonian Channel. If you have never seen the show, it is an hour of drone footage from a place of interest in America. Each episode features a different state or region. The imagery is breathtaking, seeing places I want to see and places I have visited in person from a different perspective.

I even enjoyed the episode that showed the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and I live in the heart of DFW. There is just something about seeing my hometown from about 400 feet in the air. I have never piloted a drone before, but I wouldn’t mind owning one.

On a recent episode of Create. Build. Manage. a guest told me of a practice he has done for years to improve his business. Derrick Kinney takes what he refers to as his yearly sabbatical. For one week out of the year he travels alone to spend time processing his life. He prays and journals three questions: How can I be a better husband, a better dad, and a better boss to my staff. What an amazing concept. One we should all consider practicing.

So often I get so focused on the issues that need solving at that very moment that I miss the opportunity to see the big picture.

Have you heard the old saying, you can’t see the forest for the trees? So often I get so focused on the issues that need solving at that very moment that I miss the opportunity to see the big picture. I need to take a virtual drone trip of my business to see things from a different perspective.

This is one of the many reasons I believe it is healthy for leaders and staff to get away from the office and decompress. Some of my best ideas come from the first few days back in the office after a vacation. Not only is my mind refreshed, but I see the issues at hand from another perspective.

As we look toward the future of our businesses in 2022, let’s all take a moment to get out of the office and get away, even if it’s for an afternoon. From a personal standpoint, how can you be a better partner to your loved one, better parent to your kids, and a better business owner, entrepreneur, or business leader? When you think about what you want to accomplish in the new year, before you approve that budget or marketing plan, take a moment to look at the big picture and answer some hard questions.

I get that the day-to-day demands are important. I lose count of the number of decisions I have to make in a single week at work. But the truth is I have hired a great team that can live without me for a couple of days, and I bet you have done the same. The best thing we can do as leaders is lead, and that starts with having a clear vision of where your business is today, so you know where you want to take it tomorrow.
